The work Matisse has a sense of joyous celebration almost unmatched in the history of art. When ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors. The cut-outs have an engaging simplicity coupled with incredible creative sophistication. I find so much optimism and beauty in these shapes, they have become playful earrings in this collection.
